Στα 85 του χρόνια άφησε την τελευταία του πνοή ο σπουδαίος μπλούζμαν του Σικάγο, ελληνικής καταγωγής, Nick Gravenites. Γεννημένος στις 2 Οκτωβρίου 1938 στο Σικάγο, από Έλληνες γονείς από το Παλαιοχώρι Αρκαδίας, ο Gravenites υπήρξε μια εμβληματική μορφή της μουσικής σκηνής, με μια καριέρα που εκτεινόταν από τη δεκαετία του ’60 μέχρι πρόσφατα. Ήταν γνωστός και ως Nick «The Greek».

Ως ερμηνευτής, κιθαρίστας και συνθέτης, είχε συνεργαστεί με σπουδαία ονόματα της μουσικής, όπως οι Paul Butterfield, Janis Joplin και John Cipollina των Quicksilver Messenger Service. Η καλλιτεχνική του πορεία περιλάμβανε σημαντικές στιγμές, όπως η ίδρυση των Electric Flag στους οποίους τραγουδούσε και έπαιζε κιθάρα και η συμμετοχή του στους Big Brother and the Holding Company.

Οι γονείς του κατάγονταν από το Παλαιοχώρι Αρκαδίας, και ο ίδιος ήταν δεύτερης γενιάς Έλληνας στην Αμερική. Η κληρονομιά του Gravenites είναι πλούσια και γεμάτη επιρροές που συνεχίζουν να εμπνέουν νέες γενιές καλλιτεχνών. Με την απώλειά του, η μουσική σκηνή χάνει έναν από τους πιο αυθεντικούς εκπροσώπους της, έναν άνθρωπο που αφιέρωσε τη ζωή του στη δημιουργία και την προώθηση της blues μουσικής.

Aπό τα μέσα της δεκαετίας του 1950 είχε βυθιστεί στην μπλουζ σκηνή της πόλης του, σχηματίζοντας, όπως αναφέρει το βιογραφικό του στην ιστοσελίδα του, μια «παρέα από αταίριαστα λευκά παιδιά» με μελλοντικούς αστέρες της ροκ όπως ο Elvin Bishop, ο Paul Butterfield και ο Michael Bloomfield. Όλοι τους, λάτρεις των μπλουζ, έγιναν σταθερά μέλη στα μπαρ και τα κλαμπ της South Side που φιλοξενούσαν μεγαθήρια όπως οι Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Reed και Otis Rush, απορροφώντας τα μουσικά μαθήματα που θα μετέτρεπαν στο μπλουζ ροκ και το ψυχεδελικό κιθαριστικό ροκ των μέσων και των τελών της δεκαετίας του ’60 και του ’70.

Στο Σαν Φρανσίσκο

Μετά από πολλά χρόνια ταξιδιών μεταξύ Σικάγο και Σαν Φρανσίσκο, ο Gravenites τελικά εγκαταστάθηκε στην Bay Area για τα καλά το 1965. Εγκατεστημένος στην ανερχόμενη μουσική σκηνή του Haight-Ashbury, ο Gravenites – ο οποίος τραγουδούσε, έπαιζε κιθάρα και φυσαρμόνικα και ήταν ένας πολύ παραγωγικός τραγουδοποιός – συνεργάστηκε με τον παλιό του φίλο από το Σικάγο, τον Bloomfield, για να σχηματίσουν τους Electric Flag το 1967. Το γκρουπ, με τον Gravenites στα φωνητικά, εμφανίστηκε στο Monterey Pop Festival του 1967, και ενώ το συγκρότημα δεν θα αποκτούσε ποτέ τη φήμη άλλων καλλιτεχνών της σκηνής, η επίδρασή του στα μπλουζ-ροκ συγκροτήματα του Σαν Φρανσίσκο της εποχής, κυρίως στους Quicksilver Messenger Service και στους Big Brother and the Holding Company, ήταν σημαντική.

Με την Τζάνις Τζόπλιν

Η φιλία του με τα μέλη των Big Brother θα είχε σημαντικό αντίκτυπο στην καριέρα της τραγουδίστριας του συγκροτήματος, την Τζάνις Τζόπλιν. Με την υποστήριξη και την ενθάρρυνση του Gravenites, η Τζόπλιν εγκατέλειψε το συγκρότημα το 1968 και ξεκίνησε μόνη της ως σόλο καλλιτέχνης. Τόσο ο Gravenites όσο και ο Bloomfield βοήθησαν στη διαμόρφωση του πρώτου σόλο άλμπουμ της Τζόπλιν, το “I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama!” του 1969, με τον Gravenites να γράφει το κομμάτι “Work Me Lord” για τον δίσκο. Το τραγούδι θα γινόταν βασικό κομμάτι των ζωντανών εμφανίσεων της Τζόπλιν και θα αποτελούσε το αποκορύφωμα της εμφάνισης της τραγουδίστριας στο Woodstock. (Η πρώην σύζυγος του Gravenites, η σχεδιάστρια ρούχων Linda Gravenites, συνέβαλε σημαντικά στο χαρακτηριστικό ντύσιμο της Τζόπλιν).

Έγραψε τα «As Good as You've Been to This World» και «Work me, Lord» για τον πρώτο προσωπικό της δίσκο καθώς και το «Buried Alive in the Blues» για το τελευταίο στούντιο άλμπουμ της Joplin «Pearl», αλλά η τραγουδίστρια πέθανε από υπερβολική δόση ηρωίνης τις πρώτες πρωινές ώρες της 4ης Οκτωβρίου 1970, την ημέρα που επρόκειτο να ηχογραφήσει το τραγούδι. Το «Buried Alive in the Blues» εμφανίστηκε ως instrumental στο «Pearl» και έδωσε τον τίτλο του (τουλάχιστον εν μέρει) στην πρώτη μεγάλη βιογραφία της τραγουδίστριας: το 1973 το «Buried Alive» της συγγραφέως Myra Friedman. Ο Gravenites συχνά ερμήνευε το τραγούδι – με τους στίχους του – σε συναυλίες ως φόρο τιμής στην Joplin. Το «Pearl» κυκλοφόρησε τρεις μήνες μετά και βρέθηκε στην κορυφή του Billboard 200 chart για εννέα εβδομάδες. Έχει πουλήσει περισσότερα από 4 εκατομμύρια αντίτυπα μόνο στις ΗΠΑ.

Το πιο γνωστό τραγούδι του, το «Born in Chicago», ήταν το εναρκτήριο κομμάτι στο ομώνυμο ντεμπούτο άλμπουμ των Paul Butterfield Blues Band το 1965 και θα γινόταν ένα από τα στάνταρ των μπλουζ. Μεταξύ των πολλών καλλιτεχνών που έχουν ηχογραφήσει εκδοχές του είναι οι Jesse Colin Young, George Thorogood, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers και, το 1990, οι Pixies. Το τραγούδι τιμήθηκε από το Blues Hall of Fame το 2003.

Ο Gravenites θα διατηρούσε ένα πολυάσχολο τοπικό προφίλ στην Bay Area για δεκαετίες, συνεργαζόμενος συχνά με τον Bloomfield, τον Taj Mahal, τον Huey Lewis και, με μεγαλύτερη συνέπεια, τον John Cipollina των Quicksilver Messenger Service. Το 2013, εμφανίστηκε στο ντοκιμαντέρ «Born in Chicago» για την μπλουζ σκηνή του Σικάγο της δεκαετίας του 1960. Η ταινία προβλήθηκε στο φεστιβάλ SXSW στο Όστιν και προβάλλεται στο Amazon Prime.

 Nicholas George Gravenites (/ɡrævɪˈnaɪtɪs/; born October 2, 1938) is an American blues, rock and folk singer, songwriter, and guitarist, best known for his work with Electric Flag (as their lead singer), Janis Joplin, Mike Bloomfield and several influential bands and individuals of the generation springing from the 1960s and 1970s.^[1] He has sometimes performed under the stage names Nick "The Greek" Gravenites and Gravy. 

 

Gravenites was born in Chicago, into a Greek-speaking family; his parents were from Palaiochori, Arcadia, in Greece. After his father died, he worked in the family candy store before he was enrolled at St. John's Northwestern Military Academy; he was expelled shortly before he was due to graduate. He then attended the University of Chicago, met Paul Butterfield and Mike Bloomfield, became a fan of blues music, and learned guitar.^[2]

He regularly patronised clubs where Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Buddy Guy and other leading blues musicians played. Gravenites spent time both in Chicago and San Francisco in the early 1960s. He wrote the song "Born in Chicago", which became the opening track on the Paul Butterfield Blues Band debut album, and, with guitarist Bloomfield, co-wrote the title track of their second album, East-West; the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.^[3]

Gravenites played in clubs with Mike Bloomfield, Charlie Musselwhite and others, and settled in San Francisco in the mid 1960s.^[4] In 1967 he formed the Electric Flag with Bloomfield.^[5] Gravenites also wrote the score for the film The Trip and produced the music for the film Steelyard Blues. According to author and pop music critic Joel Selvin, Gravenites is "the original San Francisco connection for the Chicago crowd."

Gravenites is credited as a "musical handyman", helping such San Francisco bands as Quicksilver Messenger Service and Janis Joplin's first solo group, the Kozmic Blues Band.^[5] He wrote several songs for Joplin, including "Work Me, Lord"^[5] and the unfinished instrumental track "Buried Alive in the Blues". Gravenites was the lead singer in the re-formed Big Brother and the Holding Company (without Joplin) from 1969 to 1972.^[5] He also worked extensively with John Cipollina after producing the first album by Quicksilver Messenger Service.^[6] He and Cipollina formed the Nick Gravenites–John Cipollina Band, which toured throughout Europe.^[5]

 John Cipollina (August 24, 1943 – May 29, 1989) was a guitarist best known for his role as a founder and the lead guitarist of the prominent San Francisco rock band Quicksilver Messenger Service. After leaving Quicksilver he formed the band Copperhead, was a member of the San Francisco All Stars and later played with numerous other bands.

 In 1967, Nick Gravenites influential group founded Electric Flag, which included as Bloomfield, organist Barry Goldberg, bassist Harvey Brooks and drummer Buddy Miles. The band debuted at the Monterey Pop Festival, her debut album A Long Time Comin 'was a success in the charts. As a music producer Gravenites recorded pop hit «One Toke Over the Line» for the duo Brewer & Shipley, and the album Right Place-Wrong Time Otis Rush, for which he was nominated for a Grammy. In 2003 he was introduced to the Blues Hall of Fame. Gravenites continues to give concerts - with a team of Chicago Blues Reunion, as well as the new composition of Electric Flag.
