Bob Smith – The Visit (1970)

This album is a very ghostly visit from Bob Smith. On much of the album the music seems to draw together the various strains of west coast psych and folk rock, and then slathers it with reverb and hay production. Mr. Smith's voice also helps with his fine, expressive baritone. He often comes across as a far more chilled out Jim Morrison, complete with metaphysical hippy 'poetry.' The music itself manages quite a bit of variation, with some first rate guitar, fun touches such as vibraphones, and a truly groovy rhythm section. There must be a few samples lurking about in Maury Alexander's and Smith's production for those who have already cashed-out on David Axelrod's albums.

This albums starts of strong, with the first three tracks all making a positive impression. "Please's" bittersweet vibe and distant harmonies are custom for a documentary soundtrack where they cover one of those San Fran festivals with headbands and hippy moms breastfeeding. "Constructive Criticism" does the same before launching into a fun, full throttle acid-guitar and cheese organ groove. I'm sure at the time this music seemed about two years or so behind the times, but I'm willing to say that doesn't matter 40 years after the fact. I find that "Mobeda Dandelions" is a particular standout. It starts sounding much like a "Morrison Hotel" outtake before launching into a wild, almost krautrock-sounding rave-up. "Can't You Jump Rope" also catches my attention through some great interweaving guitar parts. The primary flaw here is really just another example of the double-album curse. The atonal plodding of "India Slumber" really disrupts the flow, and if you also cut the somewhat dull blues of "Source You Blues," you'd have an even better single album.

While there is some mild experimentation, "The Visit" doesn't do a whole lot that you haven't heard before. It is, however, a top rate encapsulation of some late 60's (especially West Coast) styles. With it's distinctively late 60's production and find performances throughtout, I find it's mostly a joy to listen to and a great, poppy psychedelic obscuritiy.

Dervishan - Desert Secrets (1972)

  • Dervishan: A Cross-Continental Psychedelic Journey
Founded in 1970, the fictional rock band Dervishan was a symbol of cultural and musical synthesis formed by five talented musicians from Iran, Turkey, the US, France and Egypt. The group’s origins lie in a chance encounter in Paris in the late 1960s. Through their shared interest in psychedelic rock and their admiration for Eastern mysticism, Dervishan became a pioneer of musical experimentation and cultural fusion.
  • The Birth of Desert Secrets
Released in 1972, Dervishan’s debut album Desert Secrets was a bold musical journey into uncharted territory. Blending the transformative textures of psychedelic rock with Middle Eastern melodies, the album was both experimental and deeply spiritual. Tracks like "Sufi Mirage" and "Sands of Layla" featured intricate oud and sitar solos over hypnotic drum beats and atmospheric bass lines. Recorded in London, the album received critical acclaim in underground music circles for its unique musical fusion of East and West, but never really found its way into the mainstream, remaining more of a cult favorite.

Purple Overdose. Το πιο σημαντικό ψυχεδελικό συγκρότημα στην Ελλάδα. Αφιέρωμα (Podcast)

Purple Overdose were founded in Athens, Greece in 1987 by Costas Constantinou (vocals, guitar, and only constant member).

The band seeked to recreate the psychedelic atmosphere of the mid 1960's while blending hard rock, jazz, oriental and even some folklore into their music. The lyrics were written in English by Constantinou, and can be described as poetic and somewhat sentimental, while also drawing inspiration from the flower power movement of the 1960's. They embraced ideals of nature, and freedom of spirit. They are similar in style to Smell Of Incense.

The first album Exit 4 was released in 1988, to critical acclaim. Members of fellow Athenian Psych band No Man's Land (6) also played on the album. The arrangements on it are slightly simpler than on later albums, incorporating elements of hard rock. The second LP, Indigo (1990) marks a move towards more complex compositions. Their next eponumous album, introduced the flute (Vasilis Kapanikis) and elements of jazz, and a further move towards more progressive compositions. Their fourth album, Solemn Visions (1996) continued in the same vein, and experimented in places with a curious mixture of blues and oriental influences. The fifth studio album, Reborn, released in 1999, is arguably the pinnacle of their career. It features longer and spacier compositions, and again a variety of styles, showing the band at their most mature.

From live releases, of particular note is The Salmon's Trip whose title is taken from the track "Reborn", a track which describes the life cycle of the salmon fish. There is also a compilation album, Painting The Air which consists of tracks from the earlier years, as well as three previously unreleased compositions.

The band gave its farewell performance in Sept 9, 2005. Constantinou died in May 2020, at the age of 60.

Musicians:
Costas Constantinou (lead guitar, cymbal, effects, vocals), Christophoros Triantophilopoulos (drums, percussion), Andreas Andriopoulos (bass), Vasilis Kapanikis (keyboards, organ, mellotron, flute S.&T. recorders), Stavros Eleftheriou (Congas, jug, assorted percussion)

Other contributors: Stelios Drisis, Aris Christou, Aris Kontoangelos, Tolis Labouris, Mihalis Vasiliou, Giorgios Papageorgiadis, Giorgos Nikas, and Makis Mpellos

Lighthouse - Lighthouse Live! 1972

Lighthouse was formed in 1969 in Toronto by vocalist/drummer Skip Prokop, previously of the Paupers, and keyboardist Paul Hoffert.[3] The two met on a flight from New York City to Toronto, and discussed forming a band structured around a rock rhythm section, jazz horn section, and classical string section. Prokop had admired Ralph Cole's playing when they shared the bill at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit, so he invited him to Toronto to be the band's guitarist. Prokop and Hoffert assembled the rest of the group from friends, studio session musicians, and Toronto Symphony Orchestra members, and proceeded to make a demo recording.

The long extended Byrd's tune "Eight Miles High" on side 2 along with their studio album hit "One Fine Morning" are a reason to keep this double vinyl 1972 release. Some of the other long jams are good, as every member gets to jam out live, there's some Jethro Tull like soloing from the flute player and some rocking guitar solos. The band had various vocalists, although Bob McBride, who also plays percussion does most of the vocals and has a very good voice, but there are lots of band members, with horns, flute viola added to the usual rock band instruments. Lighthouse incorporate jazz into their rock songs and the largeness of their band is a good fit for this. There's no "Pretty Lady" live, maybe the best song Lighthouse ever wrote along with "One Fine Morning" and "Sunny Days", because they had not written it yet, that song showed up on the 1974 Can You Feel It album, which I have on vinyl. Drummer Skip Prokop formed Lighthouse in 1968. The Canadian band released two singles on RCA in 1970 and played at the Newport and Monterey Jazz Festivals and the Isle of Wight Festival, though they had turned down Woodstock."

Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow (1967)

Jefferson Airplane was an American rock band based in San Francisco, California, that became one of the pioneering bands of psychedelic rock. Formed in 1965, the group defined the San Francisco Sound and was the first from the Bay Area to achieve international commercial success. They headlined the Monterey Pop Festival (1967), Woodstock (1969), Altamont Free Concert (1969), and the first Isle of Wight Festival (1968)[1] in England. Their 1967 breakout album Surrealistic Pillow was one of the most significant recordings of the Summer of Love. Two songs from that album, "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit", are among Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time".[2]

The October 1966 to February 1970 lineup of Jefferson Airplane, consisting of Marty Balin (vocals), Paul Kantner (guitar, vocals), Grace Slick (vocals, keyboards), Jorma Kaukonen (lead guitar, vocals), Jack Casady (bass), and Spencer Dryden (drums), was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.[3] Balin left the band in 1971. After 1972, Jefferson Airplane effectively split into two groups. Kaukonen and Casady moved on full-time to their own band, Hot Tuna. Slick, Kantner, and the remaining members of Jefferson Airplane recruited new members and regrouped as Jefferson Starship in 1974, with Balin eventually joining them. Jefferson Airplane received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.

Gypsy -Gypsy 1970

Gypsy was an American progressive rock band from Minnesota, formed as The Underbeats (1962–1968).[1][2] Gypsy was the house band at the Whisky a Go Go, West Hollywood, California from September 1969 to April 1971 and were known in 1970 for their US Billboard Hot 100 single "Gypsy Queen Part 1", which peaked at #62. The track "Dead And Gone" was played extensively on KSHE St. Louis, KADI St. Louis, and KWK St. Louis. Most of Gypsy's music was composed and written by guitarist and singer Enrico Rosenbaum. Drummer Bill Lordan went on to play with Sly & the Family Stone and a long career with Robin Trower. Keyboardist James Walsh continued the band in various incarnations as The James Walsh Gypsy Band.[2] The James Walsh Gypsy Band had one Hot 100 entry in 1978 with, "Cuz, It's You Girl" which peaked at #71.[3]

The group has no relation to the British band of the same name formed in 1968, who recorded two albums for United Artists Records in the UK.[4]

Jim Johnson died of esophageal cancer in hospice care on September 26, 2019, at age 76.[5][6] James '"Owl" Walsh died of congestive heart failure at hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on March 4, 2023, at age 74.[7][8]

Christopher - Christopher 1970

Christopher were a psychedelic/progressive rock band out of Texas who’s sole album, 1970’s Christopher, has become increasingly popular and sought after by collectors over the years. The album had a limited repressing on both vinyl and CD, including an official reissue by Gear Fab. Christopher’s sound combines fuzz guitar tone with more progressive rock elements.

The band formed in 1968 with members Richard Avitts (guitar), Leon Rudniki (bass), and Doug Tull (drums). Originally known as Union Gas, the band changed their name when they signed a contract with Metromedia. The label suggested a name change to help avoid any confusion with Pacific Gas and Electric, another band at the time. The band agreed, but still performed live as United Gas. By this time, Rudnicki was replaced by Doug Walden (vocals, bass, keyboards). Christopher became the band’s new name due to the inspiration of St. Christopher, and the music featured spiritual flavouring.

While recording the album, Tull’s drug problems were increasingly problematic. He attempted suicide and was fired from the band. The album was completed using session musicians, including Terrance Hand, Ron Kramer, and John Simpson. Tull went to form the band Josefus, and eventually did commit suicide.
