Christopher - Christopher 1970

Christopher were a psychedelic/progressive rock band out of Texas who’s sole album, 1970’s Christopher, has become increasingly popular and sought after by collectors over the years. The album had a limited repressing on both vinyl and CD, including an official reissue by Gear Fab. Christopher’s sound combines fuzz guitar tone with more progressive rock elements.

The band formed in 1968 with members Richard Avitts (guitar), Leon Rudniki (bass), and Doug Tull (drums). Originally known as Union Gas, the band changed their name when they signed a contract with Metromedia. The label suggested a name change to help avoid any confusion with Pacific Gas and Electric, another band at the time. The band agreed, but still performed live as United Gas. By this time, Rudnicki was replaced by Doug Walden (vocals, bass, keyboards). Christopher became the band’s new name due to the inspiration of St. Christopher, and the music featured spiritual flavouring.

While recording the album, Tull’s drug problems were increasingly problematic. He attempted suicide and was fired from the band. The album was completed using session musicians, including Terrance Hand, Ron Kramer, and John Simpson. Tull went to form the band Josefus, and eventually did commit suicide.
