Coleman Hawkins - Soul (Full Album) 1960

Coleman Randolph Hawkins (November 21, 1904 – May 19, 1969), nicknamed "Hawk" and sometimes "Bean", was an American jazz tenor saxophonist.[1] One of the first prominent jazz musicians on his instrument, as Joachim E. Berendt explained: "there were some tenor players before him, but the instrument was not an acknowledged jazz horn".[2] Hawkins biographer John Chilton described the prevalent styles of tenor saxophone solos prior to Hawkins as "mooing" and "rubbery belches."[3] Hawkins cited as influences Happy CaldwellStump Evans, and Prince Robinson, although he was the first to tailor his method of improvisation to the saxophone rather than imitate the techniques of the clarinet. Hawkins' virtuosic, arpeggiated approach to improvisation, with his characteristic rich, emotional, and vibrato-laden tonal style, was the main influence on a generation of tenor players that included Chu BerryCharlie BarnetTex BenekeBen WebsterVido MussoHerschel EvansBuddy Tate, and Don Byas, and through them the later tenormen, Arnett CobbIllinois JacquetFlip PhillipsIke QuebecAl Sears,[4] Paul Gonsalves, and Lucky Thompson.[5] While Hawkins became known with swing music during the big band era, he had a role in the development of bebop in the 1940s.[1]

Kenneth Earl Burrell (born July 31, 1931) is an American jazz guitarist known for his work on numerous top jazz labels: Prestige, Blue Note, Verve, CTI, Muse, and Concord. His collaborations with Jimmy Smith were notable, and produced the 1965 Billboard Top Twenty hit Verve album Organ Grinder Swing.[1] He has cited jazz guitarists Charlie ChristianOscar Moore, and Django Reinhardt as influences, along with blues guitarists T-Bone Walker and Muddy Waters.[2][3][4]

Burrell is a professor and Director of Jazz Studies at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.[5]

Bryant was born in PhiladelphiaPennsylvania, on December 24, 1931.[1] His mother was an ordained minister who had taught herself to play the piano; his father also played the piano and sang.[2] His brothers were the bass player Tommy, drummer and singer Len, and Lynwood.[3] Ray began playing the piano around the age of six or seven, following the example of his mother and his sister, Vera.[1][3] Gospel influences in his playing came from being part of the church at this stage in his early life.[4] He had switched from classical music to jazz by his early teens and played the double bass at junior high school.[3] He was first paid to play when he was 12: "I would play for dances, and they'd sneak me into bars. I'd get four or five bucks a night, which was good money then."[2] He turned professional aged 14, and immediately joined a local band led by Mickey Collins.[4]
